Ever wondered why there never was (and probably never will be) a movie adaptation of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye? After reading this thesis, you might get an idea.
Almost 80% of every movie we see is based on a novel. That’s a lot. And you’ll probably be surprised to hear that some of your favorite movies started off as novels. Nevertheless, you often hear people say “the book was better than the film”. Could this be true? And if so, then why is it true?
To find the answers to these and other questions, I did a lot of research including three case studies on novel adaptations. I also interviewed director George Sluizer and screenwriter Erwin de Vries on their experiences with writing and directing novel adaptations.
